Certain things in life can be very stubborn. Your mother-in-law, a two-year-old having a tantrum in the middle of the supermarket, your dog who continues to pee in the exact same spot of your lawn every day, and your boss, among many others.
Pockets of body fat can join that list. But Dr. Ip isn’t fazed; he offers liposuction to get rid of the fat permanently.
Liposuction has changed
First introduced in the U.S. in the 80s, liposuction was originally quite a violent procedure. The doctor had to move the cannula (which was much larger than those used today) back and forth violently under the skin to break loose the fat deposits to suction them out. This caused serious tissue trauma and bruising that lasted for weeks. Patients had to be under general anesthesia during the procedure.
But techniques have evolved dramatically. Liposuction today is far less invasive, with short recovery periods and most procedures performed under only local anesthesia. Liquid with anesthetic has been added, along with options of power or ultrasound to help loosen and ease the removal of the fat.
Dr. Ip offers three liposuction techniques to fit your situation.
In tumescent liposuction, Dr. Ip injects a saline solution mixed with epinephrine and lidocaine into the target area. This helps loosen the fat, constricts the blood vessels, and provides comfort. Then he makes three to five tiny incisions and inserts a thin cannula to suction out the fat and excess fluids.
Powered liposuction uses a powered cannula that makes a mechanical sweeping motion to help break loose and remove the fat. Powered liposuction is very precise and can be perfect for smaller areas.
In ultrasound-assisted liposuction, ultrasonic energy is applied under the skin through a thin metallic rod to break down the fat molecules. A cannula then suctions them away.
