Liposuction is the most popular cosmetic surgery for one reason — it is incredibly effective. If you have a fat pocket that you just can’t get rid of with changes in diet or exercise regimens, liposuction can get rid of it.
Here are the three specialized techniques that Dr. Ip uses when he performs liposuction:
Tumescent liposuction —
Sterile saline solution that usually includes the anesthetic lidocaine is injected into the area where the fat is to be removed. The saltwater helps loosen the fat molecules, making them easier to remove with the cannula (the thin hollow tube that suctions out the fat and excess fluids).
Powered liposuction —
This method uses a cannula that is mechanically swept back and forth in the target area to harvest the fat. Powered liposuction is very precise, particularly on smaller areas. This method can be preferable because it limits swelling and discomfort after the procedure.
Ultrasound-assisted liposuction —
In this method, a small metallic rod is inserted under the skin in the target areas. It emits ultrasonic energy that breaks down the fat molecules, making them easier to remove.
After liposuction, patients will experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the treated areas. Compression garments will need to be worn over the treated areas and physical activity kept to a minimum.
